Fruit Classification
There are various ways to classify fruits, but one of the most common and practical is based on their flavor:
1. Acidic fruits:
- They are characterized by their sour and refreshing flavor, due to their high content of citric acid.
- Some examples include: orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, pineapple, strawberry, kiwi, mandarin, pomegranate, cat's claw, passion fruit.
2. Semi-acidic fruits:
- They have a milder sour flavor than acidic fruits, with a touch of sweetness.
- Examples: apple, pear, grape, peach, plum, apricot, cherry, raspberry, currant.
3. Sweet fruits:
- They are distinguished by their predominantly sweet flavor, with low acidity.
- Some examples include: banana, mango, watermelon, melon, fig, date, custard apple, mamey, medlar, sapote.
4. Neutral fruits:
- They have a balanced flavor, neither sour nor sweet, with a refreshing touch.
- Examples: coconut, avocado, kiwi, cucumber.
Other classifications:
- By color: red fruits, green fruits, yellow fruits, orange fruits, blue fruits, purple fruits.
- By harvest season: spring fruits, summer fruits, autumn fruits, winter fruits.
- By consumption: fresh fruits, dried fruits, dehydrated fruits, canned fruits.
- By botany: citrus fruits, pome fruits, drupes, berries, tropical fruits, etc.
Remember: This classification is general and some fruits could belong to more than one category. The important thing is to know the different characteristics of the fruits to consume a variety that provides the nutrients necessary for a healthy diet.
