Fruit Classification

There are various ways to classify fruits, but one of the most common and practical is based on their flavor:

  • They are characterized by their sour and refreshing flavor, due to their high content of citric acid.
  • Some examples include: orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, pineapple, strawberry, kiwi, mandarin, pomegranate, cat's claw, passion fruit.

2. Semi-acidic fruits:

  • They have a milder sour flavor than acidic fruits, with a touch of sweetness.
  • Examples: apple, pear, grape, peach, plum, apricot, cherry, raspberry, currant.

3. Sweet fruits:

  • They are distinguished by their predominantly sweet flavor, with low acidity.
  • Some examples include: banana, mango, watermelon, melon, fig, date, custard apple, mamey, medlar, sapote.

4. Neutral fruits:

  • They have a balanced flavor, neither sour nor sweet, with a refreshing touch.
  • Examples: coconut, avocado, kiwi, cucumber.

Other classifications:

  • By color: red fruits, green fruits, yellow fruits, orange fruits, blue fruits, purple fruits.
  • By harvest season: spring fruits, summer fruits, autumn fruits, winter fruits.
  • By consumption: fresh fruits, dried fruits, dehydrated fruits, canned fruits.
  • By botany: citrus fruits, pome fruits, drupes, berries, tropical fruits, etc.
